Shutting Out the Sky

Five young people, from different parts of Europe, immigrate to the United States in the early 1900's - through Ellis Island, into the streets of the Lower East Side of New York. Their stories include dangerous work, low pay, long days, crowded and expensive living conditions, lack of water, search for an education - while trying to survive and raise money for family back in the "old country". This is a story of young people's courage and strength against great odds - and their hunger for a better life. Honor Book for Older Children, 2004.
