Esperanza Rising

Esperanza has been raised in a family of privilege that owns and operates El Rancho de las Rojas in Aquascalientes, Mexico. On Esperanza's 13th birthday a suspicious fire burns down their home and grape farm, and her father is found dead on their property. As her mother cannot inherit the land, it goes to Esperanza's paternal uncles who turn the family out. The family servants, Hortensia, Alfonzo and their son Miguel, bring Esperanza and her mother with them as they flee to California to work was farm worker. Life has drastically and dramatically changed for Esperanza who now experiences the Mexican farm worker's life. When her Mother falls ill with Valley Fever, Esperanza finds she is now the head of her family and must do what it takes to provide for them. Winner books for older children, 2001.
