New Shoes

Meyer, Susan Lynn.  New Shoes.  Illustrated by Eric Velasquez. Holiday House, 2015. Ella Mae is about to get new shoes for school. But at the shoe store she and her mother must wait until the white customers are served. When the store owner finally turns to them, it is only for her mother to trace her foot on a piece of paper, because Black people can\'t try on shoes that might later be purchased by white people. Embarrassed and upset, Ella Mae and her friend Charlotte come up with an idea. They collect out-grown or used shoes from throughout the neighborhood, save their baby-sitting money for shoe laces and polish - and fix the shoes up shining and fresh. Then they open their own little store where anyone can try shoes on until they find the size that truly fits. Winner of the 2016 award for younger readers.
