Separate is Never Equal: Syliva Mendez & Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation

Tonatiuh, Duncan.  Separate is Never Equal: Syliva Mendez & Her Family's Fight for Desegregation. Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2014. When the Mendez family moved to a new farm, they were not allowed to enroll their children in the nearby school but told they had to take them to the Mexican school much farther away, falling apart, with no library, no play yard. This gorgeously illustrated book tells the true story from young Sylvia\'s view point as her family struggles and eventually sues to end segregated schools in California for all children. Their victory becomes one of the key decisions that impacts the Supreme Court years later in Brown vs. Board of Education outlawing racial segregation throughout the country.  Winner book for younger children, 2015.
