The Birchbark House

Omakayas, a seven year old Ojibwa girl, lives on the Island of Lake Superior in 1847. Although the chimookoman, the white man, encroaches upon their land, the Tribe strives to live life as they always have. A visitor comes and is welcomed into the family, but unknowingly, bring small pox to the community. Omakayas is stoic, helping her grandmother care for her family who all fall victim to the dreaded disease. Her best friend and beloved baby brother do not survive. The story is filled with beautiful descriptions of traditions and beliefs of the Ojibwa people, season by season. Honor Book for Older Children, 2000.
